Final Fantasy XIII: Random Enemy Encounters vs. Visible Foes

From the Wirebot blog, by WilliamLeary on 03/23/2010 5:00pm (original link)

Final Fantasy XIII has real time enemies roaming the world freely, an enemy encounter system that was not considered the norm in Final Fantasy games for the longest time. Do you miss the days of random enemy encounters?

Why would you play a game if you just bypass all of the battles and walk by all of your enemies? I don’t do such a thing. So having visible enemy encounters ALA Kingdom Hearts is awesome. In that game, its balanced between them initiating a fight or you being able to avoid them at critical times. I think the KH system is more balanced than FFXII, where you can simply avoid too many battles.

At one point in Final Fantasy XIII the tutorial actually suggests that you avoid the upcoming battles because your characters aren’t strong enough. It then goes on to say that you may have to use this tactic in the future. Weird, I know, but its something they apparently did consciously.

i don’t like the random encounters. sometimes you’re tired and all you want to do is get to a save point but then monsters randomly pop up
