Gabe Newell Strikes Again, Compares PS3 to Gamecube

From the Wirebot blog, by WilliamLeary on 05/21/2010 4:00pm (original link)

I’ve caught flack for openly hating VALVe co-founder Gabe Newell in the past. Not because his no-neck frame makes him look like he could be in the upcoming Gears of War 3, but because he refuses to work with PS3 architecture and subsequently denies a huge chunk of console owners the right to enjoy VALVe developed games. Click below to read his latest PS3 criticism.

“e his no-neck frame makes him look like he could be in the upcoming Gears of War 3,” sick burn!

he also kind of looks like Wrex from Mass Effect

Let’s look at this rationally, William. He’s saying that the PS3 architecture is ‘closed off’ to third-party developers, and comparing that - the ‘closed off’ feature of their architecture - to the Nintendo Gamecube. In comparison to the XBox 360 (DirectX) and the Mac (OpenGL, using PC-centric components) it pretty much is an alien landscape from the point of view of a PC-focused developer. Somehow, you’ve managed to reduce this arguement down to “PS3 = Gamecube? My god, the PS3 isn’t a Gamecube” and then make a bunch of fat jokes.

Hey Patrick, coincidentally when I said I’ve caught flack for bashing Newell I was referring to you. So I love that you said something again! With that said, I think you are 100% correct in your detailed breakdown and true analysis of the situation, but I was satirizing the situation a bit and reacting/hearing what a Sony fanboy would when they here this quote.

When PS3 fans here any negative comments about their beloved system they over react, this was an over reaction, but it is not without warrant. Sure, the analogy Gabe gave was an accurate one, but I (in my opinion) believe he used the Gamecube as a negative comparison purposefully. Many of his past comments about the PS3 have been negative. And I’m not the only one who think that Gabe is a PS3 basher either, a quick google search with the terms newell, bash, and Sony proves that.

So yeah, the fat jokes were a bit much, but they were to show the frustration that PS3 gamers feel when negative words are thrown at their favorite system. I mean every argument on the internet boils down to your mama and fat jokes in the end anyway.
